About this spot

Japan's largest domain school, established by Tokugawa Nariaki, which pairs with Kairakuen as a place of learning. The final shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, studied here as a young student, and the room where he was confined after the restoration of imperial rule remains. Gazing at the well-maintained garden from the tatami-floored great hall feels like being an Edo-era student. It is also known as a famous plum blossom site alongside Kairakuen.

Tips

A combination ticket with Kairakuen is a good value. The tatami flooring is gentle on tired feet, and resting on the veranda is most pleasant. Confirm the closing time in advance.

Best time to visit

Allow 40–60 minutes. Early evening before closing is quiet and atmospheric.
