Tour the Thatched Samurai Residence Where the Dutch Scholar Spent His Later Years
About this spot
The residence where Takamimi Izumi, a late-Edo Dutch scholar and senior retainer of the Koga Domain, spent his final years. The thatched-roof building, said to have been constructed using leftover materials from Koga Castle, and its well-maintained garden convey the castle town's heritage. This is a place where you can imagine the life of the man portrayed in the famous portrait by Watanabe Kazan, whom you may recognize from textbooks.
Tips
Admission is free and the hall is located right next to the Koga History Museum. The staff may share interesting anecdotes about Izumi, making it a perfect introduction to history for children.
Best time to visit
Plan for 20-30 minutes. Visit as a set with the museum in the morning.
