Walk Among Legendary Sites of the Nine-Tailed Fox on a Wooden Boardwalk
About this spot
An unusual lava stone said to be where the nine-tailed fox transformed, this scenic spot was also visited by Matsuo Basho during his journey through 'The Narrow Road to the Deep North.' The Sai-no-Kawara area, thick with sulfurous scents, features a well-maintained wooden boardwalk where you can safely explore amid the distinctive landscape of a thousand stone Jizo statues. This desolate scenery combined with legend makes it Nasu's premier power spot.
Tips
Since volcanic gases are present, do not enter restricted areas. The sulfurous smell may be stronger depending on wind direction; if you're feeling unwell, avoid overexertion.
