About this spot

A limestone cave said to have been the hideout of Minamoto no Aritsuna, a retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Inside, warrior dolls recreate daily life from that time, and legend says the hideout was discovered because of rice-rinsing water. Compact enough to see in a short visit, it's a mystery spot filled with historical romance, unique to Shiobara.

Tips

The cave is cool and dim inside, and the armored dolls along with explanations of the hidden-village legend create great atmosphere. Some sections have low ceilings, so watch your step and your head. It's conveniently located for a stop after lunch in the hot-spring town.

Best time to visit

Allow 30 to 40 minutes. It's relatively uncrowded, so you can take your time looking around.
