Climb 95 Stone Steps from the Main Torii Gate and Pay Your Respects as a Family

About this spot

Enshrined in the center of Utsunomiya, this is the First Shrine of Shimotsuke Province with over 1,600 years of history. As you climb the stone steps from the main torii gate facing the main street, you'll find the shrine buildings surrounded by trees, enveloped in a refreshing atmosphere despite being in the heart of the city. It's the family guardian deity cherished for shichigo-san (children's milestone celebrations) and first-month shrine visits.

Tips

The 95 stone steps are challenging with a stroller, so taking turns carrying children is safer. Banba Plaza at the foot of the approach is a popular event venue and fun for detours.

Best time to visit

Allow 40 minutes. Even in the early afternoon, there's minimal congestion for prayer.
