Tour the World Heritage Red Brick Factory with a Professional Guide
About this spot
A government-run silk mill founded in Meiji 5 (1872) that supported Japan's modernization, registered as a world heritage site and national treasure. Gunma's premier attraction features rows of original French silk-reeling machines in the historic Filature Building (国宝の繰糸所), and the impressive red brick cocoon storehouse stretching over 100 meters. Joining a guided tour is highly recommended, as it explains the history in an easy-to-understand manner for children compared to self-guided visits.
Tips
The grounds have many gravel paths but are passable with a stroller. Register for guided or audio tours at the entrance counter. Restrooms and nursing rooms are located near the East Cocoon Storage Building (東置繭所).
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 90 minutes. Visiting shortly after opening in the morning is less crowded and more comfortable.
