About this spot

A rare "descending shrine" where the main hall appears down stone steps beyond the main gate—uncommon throughout Japan. Honored as the premier Shinto shrine of Kōzuke Province with nearly 1,500 years of history, the current sanctuary is said to have been rebuilt by the third Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu. The vermillion and black edifice features beautiful polychrome decorations and remains cherished locally for shichigo-san (七五三) celebrations and infant shrine visits.

Tips

The path to the main hall involves steep stone steps. It's safest to leave your stroller at the main gate and carry small children. Parking is available near the main gate, and the visit can be completed in about 30 minutes.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 30 minutes. Morning hours are quiet and peaceful for worship.
