About this spot

An about 10-minute ride through the air to Tenjindaira, at an elevation of 1,319m on the slopes of Mt. Tanigawa, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. The gondola window fills with the mountainside and green valley, and from Tenjindaira you can take in Mt. Tanigawa's twin peaks and the mountains of Joshu. Known as a ski resort in winter and famous for alpine plants and autumn foliage from spring through fall, it's a classic Minakami sightseeing spot.

Tips

The mountaintop view tends to be clearer in the morning, so that's the best time to aim for. Taking the lift up from Tenjindaira to Tenjin Pass lets you see Mt. Tanigawa's twin peaks head-on. It can feel chilly even in summer, so bring a layer.

Best time to visit

Allow 2 hours round trip. Morning, when the view is clearest, is the best time.
