About this spot

The downbound platform of the Joetsu Line sits inside the Shin-Shimizu Tunnel, with 486 steps leading up to the station building at ground level, earning it the nickname Japan's ultimate mole station. Descending the dimly lit stairs feels wonderfully out of the ordinary, like an expedition, and it's worth visiting even if you're not a railway fan. The triangular-roofed station building is also memorable, and there's a cafe inside.

Tips

Going up and down the 486 steps is more of a workout than you'd expect. Bring non-slip shoes and something to drink, and checking train passing times in advance makes it easier to get good photos.

Best time to visit

Allow 40 minutes for a visit. Trains are infrequent, so check the schedule.
