Exploring Tanuki Statues at a Temple with Legends of the Fortune-Telling Teapot
About this spot
An ancient Soto Zen temple known as the setting of the folktale 'Bunbuku Chagama' (The Lucky Tea Kettle). More than 20 expressively carved tanuki stone statues line the approach, and walking while counting them with children naturally brings smiles to your faces. The legendary tea kettle is housed in the main hall and can be viewed up close during the treasure viewing. Browsing for tanuki souvenirs at the gate shop is another fun highlight.
Tips
The approach is flat and easy to walk with a stroller. Posing with the tanuki statues for a commemorative photo is the classic must-do. Treasure viewings are received at the main hall.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Early morning is quiet and allows for a leisurely pace.
