Walk through an ancient temple and visit the Gogatsuam cottage associated with the monk Ryokan
About this spot
A historic temple on the mid-slope of Kokujo Mountain, said to be the oldest in Echigo. The grounds, surrounded by towering cedar trees, offer a quiet stillness that contrasts beautifully with the bustle of the market—perfect for a post-lunch stroll. The Gogatsuam cottage, where the poet-monk Ryokan spent his final years, is just a short walk from the temple grounds. The humble appearance of the cottage evokes the romance of history.
Tips
Temple grounds are free to visit. The approach path and road to Gogatsuam have stone steps and slopes, so wear comfortable shoes. A baby carrier is safer than a stroller. It's just a few minutes' walk from the parking lot to the main hall.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour 15 minutes. The afternoon sunlight filtering through the trees is delightful
