View the Gate and Treasure Hall at the Zen Temple Where Kenshin Studied

About this spot

A renowned Soto Zen temple where Uesugi Kenshin is said to have received scholarly training in his youth. The plaque reading "The Ultimate Truth" (第一義) displayed at the temple gate is known as Kenshin's personal motto, and his grave is located within the grounds. The treasure hall exhibits items connected to the Uesugi clan—a must-see for history-loving families. The quiet approach lined with trees is perfect for a nature-bathed stroll.

Tips

You can visit the treasure hall in combination with the main grounds at the reception desk. The grounds have many gravel paths, so a baby carrier is better than a stroller. Parking available.

Best time to visit
