A rare museum in Japan devoted primarily to ink paintings from the modern period onwards. The single-story building, which incorporates Japanese design, has a low ceiling that feels reassuringly intimate, making it surprisingly pleasant to view artworks while listening to the sound of rain. The spacious lawn garden is a picture-perfect sight even viewed through the windows. Children can enjoy the visit without boredom by turning it into a quiz: 'Which painting has the darkest ink?'

Tips

The permanent collection exhibition has reasonable admission fees; special exhibitions have separate charges. The viewing atmosphere here calls for quiet appreciation, making morning visits easier for young children. A tea room with tatami mats offers tea service (charged) on certain days.
