About this spot

This is the terminus of the Toyama Chihou Railway Tateyama Line (富山地方鉄道立山線) and the Toyama-side gateway to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (立山黒部アルペンルート), a mountain station nestled among the peaks. The station building houses a shop and eateries, and with the cable car ticket gates and hikers coming and going, you can feel the lively atmosphere befitting the entrance to a mountain resort. The area around the station is surrounded by the gorge of the Joganji River (常願寺川), and green mountain ranges are visible close by even from the platform. The bus to Shomyo Falls (称名滝) also starts from here, making it the perfect first stop as your base for the day.

Tips

There is a large free parking lot around the station, so it is easy to stop by car. To reach Shomyo Falls, take the seasonally operated bus or drive. Buying drinks and snacks at the shop beforehand makes for a more comfortable walk along the promenade to the falls. It is a good idea to use the restroom at the station before setting off.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. Around 9am, before the tour buses arrive, it is relatively uncrowded.
