Walk the footpath and gaze up at Japan's highest waterfall from the observation platform
About this spot
Boasting Japan's highest drop of 350 meters, this is Tateyama's representative grand waterfall, designated as a National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument. The sight of water flowing from Midagahara plummeting down the cliff in four tiers is spectacular, and from late spring through early summer, when snowmelt increases the water volume, the neighboring Hannoki Waterfall appears, creating a stunning V-shaped vista. The walk from the Shōmyō-hira parking area to the observation platform along the ravine-side footpath takes about 30 minutes. As you approach, the roar and water vapor intensify, and at the bridge of the observation platform, you'll experience the full power of being showered with fine mist.
Tips
The footpath is paved but features a gentle uphill grade, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. For young children, a baby carrier is safer than a stroller. The area around the observation platform gets wet from the spray, so a lightweight rain jacket or towel is helpful for comfort. The Shōmyō-hira parking area is free, and you can also use the seasonal bus service from Tateyama Station. In winter, the road is closed, so visit during the green season.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 2 hours (including round-trip walk). Spring through early summer, when snowmelt increases water volume, offers the most spectacular views.
