Boasting Japan's greatest drop at 350 meters, this magnificent waterfall is designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, and represents Tateyama (立山) at its finest. Water flowing down from Midagahara (弥陀ヶ原) plunges over the cliff in four tiers, an awe-inspiring sight, and from spring through early summer, when snowmelt swells the flow, Hannoki Falls (ハンノキ滝) appears alongside it, forming a spectacular V-shaped view. From the parking lot at Shomyodaira (称名平) to the Takimidai (滝見台) viewing platform is about a 30-minute walk along the promenade beside the gorge. As you draw closer, the roar and the mist grow more intense, and standing on the bridge at the viewing platform, you can feel the full force of the falls as fine spray showers your whole body.

Tips

The promenade is paved but has a gentle, continuous uphill slope, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. For small children, a baby carrier is more reassuring than a stroller. The area around the viewing platform gets wet from spray, so a light rain jacket or a towel will help keep you comfortable. The Shomyodaira parking lot is free, and a seasonally operated bus is also available from Tateyama Station (立山駅). The road is closed in winter, making the falls inaccessible, so visit during the green season.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours, including the round-trip walk. The falls are most powerful from spring through early summer, when snowmelt increases the water volume.
