Walk the promenade to the observation plaza and witness the specially designated scenic Sarutobi Gorge, where the canyon narrows most dramatically
About this spot
Located about a 20-minute walk along the promenade from Keyaki-daira Station, this scenic spot marks where the Kurobe River main current narrows most dramatically. Designated as both a special scenic site and special natural monument by the nation, white rapids surge through the narrow gorge between towering cliff walls. Legend says the river is so narrow that a monkey could leap across it, which inspired the name. The observation plaza reached by your own two feet after disembarking the trolley makes a perfect milestone for the family's small adventure.
Tips
The promenade has rocky sections and stairs, so it's unsuitable for strollers; wear comfortable hiking shoes. The footpath may be closed depending on weather and season, so check the current conditions at Keyaki-daira Station before heading out. Allow ample time to catch your return trolley.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour and 20 minutes total (including round-trip walking). Early afternoon offers the most comfortable walking conditions.
