About this spot

A scenic spot about a 20-minute walk from Keyakidaira Station (欅平駅) along the promenade, where the main stream of the Kurobe River (黒部川) narrows to its tightest point. Designated a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Special Natural Monument, here a swift current sends up white spray as it rushes between the rock walls on either side. The name comes from a legend that the river was once narrow enough for a monkey to leap across. The observation plaza, reached on foot after getting off the trolley train, makes a perfect goal for the family's little adventure.

Tips

The promenade has rocky sections and stairs, making it unsuitable for strollers, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The promenade may be closed depending on the weather or season, so check its status at Keyakidaira Station before heading out. Allow plenty of time before the departure of the trolley train back.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 20 minutes, including the round-trip walk. Early afternoon is easiest for walking.
