Savor the Morning of Japan's Three Great Gardens Around the Kotoji Lantern and Kasumi Pond
About this spot
One of Japan's Three Great Gardens alongside Mito's Kairaku-en and Okayama's Kouraku-en, this is a stroll garden lovingly cultivated over long years by successive daimyo of the Kaga clan. The view of the two-legged Kotoji Lantern and Kasumi Pond is Kanazawa's signature scenery and a standard photography spot. As you walk, attractions continue to appear—including the Karasaki Pine famous for its snow-loading ropes and Japan's oldest-class fountain. The small paths winding past curved streams and man-made hills change character with each season, and history enthusiasts can walk while pondering the aesthetic sensibilities of the former lords.
Tips
Early morning hours have fewer visitors, making photography at the Kotoji Lantern easier. The park features gravel paths with many slopes and steps, so a baby carrier is safer than a stroller. Combination tickets covering both Kenroku-en and Kanazawa Castle Park turrets are also available. Multiple entrances such as Katsura Slope and Zuishin Slope exist, so deciding which exit to use will make your next transition easier.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Early morning right after opening is peacefully recommended.
