This lady's residence was built by the 13th Kaga clan daimyo, Maeda Nariharyu, for his mother, and is designated as a Japanese Important Cultural Property. The Gunjou (deep blue) chamber with its vivid indigo ceiling is the pinnacle of daimyo culture found nowhere else. The veranda facing the garden features a pillar-free design, allowing the garden to appear as a continuous painting from the sitting room. The interior, adorned throughout with floral and bird motifs, is filled with the refined elegance befitting a lady's residence, offering a deep appreciation of the Hundred Million Kaga heritage.
Tips
The transition is very easy, as it's just a short walk from the Zuishin Slope exit of Kenroku-en. Remove your shoes for the tour inside; photography is not permitted indoors, so commit the views to memory. Closed Wednesdays (or the following day if Wednesday is a holiday), so check the day. After your visit, dining options are concentrated around Kenroku-en's base and Hirosaka area.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Morning light from the garden makes the sitting rooms particularly beautiful.
