From the Ishikawa Gate Through the Hishiyagura Turret and Gojikken Nagaya - A Tour of the White-Tiled Castle and Stonework
About this spot
This expansive park was created from the former residence of the Maeda clan, feudal lords of Kaga, with buildings featuring distinctive white lead-tile roofs and earthen-colored plaster walls standing out against blue skies. The Ishikawa Gate, which you pass through after crossing the Ishikawa Bridge from the Kenroku-en side, is an Important Cultural Property. The Hishiyagura Turret, Gojikken Nagaya building, and Hashizume Gate turret, restored using traditional construction methods, allow interior viewing, where you can experience the power of traditional timber joinery and the defensive ingenuity of the era. The park is also called the "Stonework Museum" for its remaining stone walls built with different techniques from different periods, and history enthusiasts could lose track of time just exploring the stonework.
Tips
Park entry is free; viewing interiors of buildings like the Hishiyagura Turret and Gojikken Nagaya requires paid admission. The park is expansive, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Tsuru-no-maru Rest Pavilion offers a free rest spot with views of the Gojikken Nagaya—perfect for catching your breath. If you venture to the Gyokusen-in Maru Garden, you can also enjoy a landscape that borrows the stonework as its backdrop.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Afternoon light highlights the white turrets beautifully for photographs.
