Next stop: Pay respects at the chaya district's tutelary shrine and search for hidden ninja statues within the groundsAbout this spot
Kanazawa's most representative chaya district, where traditional tea house architecture from the clan period still stands. Selected as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, the streetscape is woven together with red-brown latticed shopfronts and stone pavements—beautiful enough to photograph simply by walking. Sweet shops utilizing traditional townhouses, gold leaf sweets shops, and Japanese crafts shops line the streets, making it perfect for a food tour date. Charming hidden shops lurk in the narrow alleyways deeper in, so exploring freely together as a couple is part of the fun.
Tips
Most shops open around 10 a.m., so the quiet pre-opening hours are ideal for photographing the main street. Weekend midday can get quite crowded. Since the streets are stone-paved, comfortable flat shoes are more practical than heels. When eating on foot, please enjoy your snacks at the shop entrance or designated eating areas—it's good etiquette.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 2 hours. The 9 a.m. hour has fewer visitors, allowing you to photograph the latticed streetscape leisurely.
