Spend a quiet moment touching brushwork and ceramics at a wooden cottage where Rosanjin once stayed

About this spot

A cultural facility showcasing the guest villa of a former inn where Kitaoji Rosanjin (北大路魯山人), renowned as a gourmet and artist, spent about half a year during his younger years. During his stay in Yamashiro as a artisan carving signboards, Rosanjin exchanged with inn proprietors and Kutani ware potters, opening the door to his ceramic art practice, so the history tells us. Every corner of this space, with its Taisho-era ambiance—from the hearth room and study to the tatami room overlooking the garden—is naturally picturesque. The exhibition hall allows you to carefully appreciate works and materials connected to Rosanjin, offering insight into the depth of Yamashiro's hot spring town culture.

Tips

Admission is fee-based (approximately 560 yen for adults). The building requires removing shoes before entering, and you can spend time relaxing in the tatami rooms. Closed days are set, so confirm opening dates before visiting. It is only a short walk from the Old Soyu Bathhouse, making it convenient for combining visits.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Afternoon hours offer soft light and a particularly pleasant atmosphere in the tatami rooms.
