About this spot
The castle ruins of Fukui Domain, built by Yuuki Hidekatsu (結城秀康), second son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, with the original moat and impressive stone walls still standing. Uniquely Fukui, the prefectural government building now stands on the original keep grounds. The restored Gorōkabashi Bridge with its wooden roof and the Yamasatoguchi Gate (山里口御門) allow you to experience the atmosphere of the past. Climbing to the castle keep foundation offers panoramic views of the city, and the historic well "Fuku no I" (福の井), said to be the origin of Fukui's name, is a must-see.
Tips
Located just a 5-minute walk from Fukui Station; viewing is free and open to the public. The outer moat and keep grounds are flat and easy to walk, though reaching the keep foundation requires climbing stone steps. Early morning is less crowded and ideal for photographing stone walls reflected in the moat.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Early morning when the moat's surface is calm is best for photography.
