Tour the samurai residence Former Uchiyama House (旧内山家), viewing parlors and gardens to experience castle town life
About this spot
A historic site preserving the mansion of the Uchiyama family, domain elders who masterfully led Ono domain's financial recovery during the late Edo period. The main house and outbuildings remain, offering close-up views of polished wooden floors, study-style parlors, and storehouses. Sitting on the veranda and gazing at the garden garden, quiet castle town time unfolds, and the daily life of samurai of the era comes to mind. Located at the base of Echizen-Ono Castle (越前大野城), it's conveniently positioned to visit alongside a castle tour.
Tips
Remove shoes before entering the residence, so easily removable footwear is comfortable. The building features level changes and steep stairs, so watch your footing carefully. Within walking distance of Echizen-Ono Castle, it's easily accessible during castle town exploration. The surrounding neighborhood features a grid-pattern layout that's easy to navigate—exploring with a town walking map is recommended.
