Cross the Scenic Cantilever Bridge and Enjoy Gorge Views Without Bridge Pillars

About this spot

A scenic spot in Ōtsuki counting among Japan's three most unusual bridges, spanning a deep gorge of the Katsuragawa River. With no pillars in the riverbed, its unique structure features cantilever beams layered four-deep projecting from both banks—the intricate engineering and scale impress when viewed up close. From the bridge, with your heart pounding at the height above the water, you'll take in the sweeping views of the green gorge and craggy rock faces. Nearby, a brick-built water channel bridge also has rustic charm, making this a fitting finale for bridge and transportation lovers. The scenery is especially beautiful during fresh green and autumn leaf seasons, and the upward-looking angle from the walking path is also recommended.

Tips

The bridge approach has stairs and slopes, so a baby carrier is more practical than a stroller. Free parking is available, with the bridge just a few minutes' walk away. The gorge can cool down in the evening, so bring a light layer.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Afternoon light beautifully illuminates the gorge greenery.
