Eat oyaki and soft ice cream while strolling, then enjoy early lunch at a soba restaurant and browse souvenirs at the gate
About this spot
This temple-gate shopping street stretches along the stone-paved approach from the Nio Gate to the Mountain Gate, lined with souvenir shops and eateries. Shinshū's signature oyaki dumplings come in numerous vegetable-filled varieties; biting into a freshly steamed one lightens your step. Soft ice cream, sweet buns, and other child-friendly treats abound, while the selection of souvenirs—seven-spice blend and Shinshū miso—delights adults. For lunch, pop into a soba restaurant right at the gate to enjoy fragrant Shinshū buckwheat noodles while the whole family rests.
Tips
Budget around ¥1,500 per adult for snacking and soba lunch. The stone pavement is stroller-navigable, though crowds around midday mean moving at a slower pace. Enjoy purchases at benches or designated rest areas to avoid spills. Popular soba shops get busy after noon, so early arrival is recommended.
Best time to visit
Allow 1.5–2 hours. Finishing lunch by 11 a.m. gives you a relaxed afternoon.
