Experience Masterpieces of Modern Sculpture at the Ivy-Draped Brick Art Museum

About this spot

An art museum housed in a striking red-brick building resembling a church, dedicated to works by sculptor Ogihara Moriemon (Rokuzankan), a native of Azumino. His masterpiece, the sculpture "Woman," is renowned as an iconic work of modern Japanese sculpture and can be appreciated up close in an intimate gallery. The museum also houses works by artists closely connected to Rokuzankan, including Kotaro Takamura, conveying the passionate energy of Meiji-era young sculptors. The ivy-draped exterior and surrounding woodlands represent one of Azumino's most distinctive landscapes—a place of beauty even just gazing at the building.

Tips

Easily accessible on foot from Hotaka Shrine. Due to the historic building's design, there is a step at the entrance; leaving strollers in the garden and holding your baby is recommended. Shinshu soba restaurants are scattered around the museum and in front of Hotaka Station, making it convenient to eat lunch before or after your visit.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Mid-morning visits are relatively quiet, allowing for peaceful appreciation.
