One of Japan's three greatest morning markets, with vendors lining the eastern bank of the Miyagawa River. Here you'll find fresh-picked vegetables and fruits from local farmers, pickled red turnips, and folk crafts like sarubōbo dolls—all wonderful to browse while chatting with the vendors. A leisurely stroll along the riverbank listening to the water's murmur is a quintessential Takayama morning experience. With warm dango and Hida apple juice in hand, wandering together sets the perfect tone for a day of food walks.
Tips
The market operates only in the morning and closes around noon, so visit early in your itinerary. Bring small change and an eco-bag for shopping and sampling. It's within walking distance to the historic streets. The riverside can be cool in the morning, so bring a light jacket.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Around 8:30 a.m., when the stalls are fully set up, is lively and recommended.
