Tour the Administrative Offices and Interrogation Room of Japan's Only Existing Historic Magistrate's Office
About this spot
This magistrate's and provincial administrator's office dates to when the Edo shogunate directly ruled Hida as a controlled territory. It is the only such administrative building with major structures still standing in all of Japan—a precious historical landmark. Period drama comes to life here with tatami-mat offices, interrogation rooms, and impressive storehouses where tax rice was kept. Details like the rabbit-shaped nail covers called "Majirōto" are fun to spot as you walk. Treading wooden corridors, you can reflect on the Hida of the Edo period.
Tips
Remove your shoes for the indoor tour, so wear slip-on shoes for convenience. It's just a short walk from the morning market across the Miyagawa River. Visiting right after opening is less crowded. Free guided tours may be available—ask at the reception desk.
