About this spot

Clear water springs forth from the banks of the Odarayoshi River (小駄良川), and this spring was selected as the very first ranked water in Japan's Hundred Best Waters. The name derives from the legend that Sogimatsu, a master of renga linked-verse poetry, built a hermitage beside this spring. The water source is divided into separate sections for different uses—drinking water, washing rice and vegetables, and bleaching—preserving the water-town wisdom of incorporating spring water into daily life. Stone-paved pathways lead down to a small shrine and a willow tree's cool shade, creating an atmosphere that inspires a deep breath of tranquility.

Tips

Located beside the Odara River, accessed via a stone-paved path descending from the Honcho (本町) street. This water source has been cherished in local life, so respect the pathways and proper etiquette when visiting. Stone pavement can be slippery when wet; hold children's hands. The clear flow of the Odarayoshi River can be enjoyed from the bridge directly beside the spring.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 30 minutes. Early afternoon is a pleasant time, as the willow tree's shade is most soothing.
