Hands-on food sample creation experience at the birthplace of food samples: make tempura and lettuce

About this spot

Gujo Hachiman is the birthplace of the food sample craftsperson credited with inventing food samples, and it remains one of Japan's leading production centers for these items today. Inside a renovated machiya (traditional wooden townhouse), the workshop's specialty is a hands-on experience creating tempura and lettuce samples using the traditional method of wax floated in hot water. The exciting moment when wax instantly transforms into tempura batter never fails to draw gasps of delight from visitors, and you can take your creations home with you. The shop is lined with sample merchandise that looks so realistic you'd do a double-take, making it a spot that will bring smiles to everyone's face.

Tips

Book in advance, as experiences are popular. Allow 40 minutes to 1 hour. Small children can participate with their guardians (confirm age requirements and availability ahead of time). Hot water is involved in the process, so listen carefully to staff instructions during the experience. The shop's merchandise area is also perfect for souvenir hunting.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. Morning sessions are often easier to book.
