About this spot
A colossal 13.7-meter-tall Buddha situated in the main hall of Shohoji Temple, located just near Gifu Park. This dry-lacquer Buddha was created with a framework woven from bamboo, covered with layers of clay and Buddhist scriptures, and finished with lacquer and gold leaf. Affectionately known as the 'Basket-woven Great Buddha,' it is sometimes counted among Japan's three great Buddhas. The painstaking work involved is said to have taken several decades, and the serene face filling the hall is truly awe-inspiring. Children viewing it from below often can't help but voice their amazement—a unique hidden gem of Gifu.
Tips
Located just a short walk from Gifu Park, making it easy to visit after lunch. Shoes are removed to view the interior, so easily removable footwear is convenient. Admission is reasonable, and the quiet temple environment encourages children to speak softly. The whole visit takes about 30 minutes.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes. Early afternoon is less crowded, allowing for quiet worship.
