A renowned Rinzai Zen temple at the foot of Mount Tokkei, said to have been founded by Soseki Musō during the late Kamakura period. The nationally designated Important Cultural Property observation hall and founder's hall stand quietly, while the garden featuring the Mushiakibashi bridge spanning the pond and cliff faces is designated as a National Scenic Spot. The contrast between the halls reflected in the water and surrounding greenery offers a peaceful respite after a day of museums. The grounds feature a large ginkgo tree that displays different beauty with each season. Art lovers will surely find the zen temple garden as a "living sculptural art" memorable.
Tips
Admission is free and the grounds can be freely explored during open hours. From the parking lot to the grounds there are slopes and stone steps, so a baby carrier is safer than a stroller. The stone pavement can be slippery after rain, so watch your footing.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. The afternoon light beautifully illuminates the pond and garden.
