Climbing the Mountain Path with Massive Boulder Stone Walls and Enjoying the Grand Panorama of the Kiso River and Mount Ena from the Observatory at the Castle Tower Ruins
About this spot
A nationally designated historic site mountain castle built atop a peak on the right bank of the Kiso River, captivating castle enthusiasts nationwide with the impressive stone walls that embrace natural massive boulders as-is. A wooden observation deck constructed at the castle tower ruins utilizing the original post holes offers a sweeping 360-degree panorama: the meandering Kiso River below and Mount Ena (恵那山) straight ahead. Along the castle approach road, impressive stone walls like those of the Great Arrow Storehouse (大矢倉跡) appear one after another, conveying the fortress's defensive nature with each step. Famous as a "spectacular mountain castle," this is the absolute highlight of the course.
Tips
From the base parking lot to the observation platform at the castle tower, it's approximately 20–30 minutes on foot via mountain path. Stone steps and rocky terrain continue throughout, so sneakers are essential, and since strollers are not feasible, bring a baby sling for carrying children. Bring water, and since the observation platform can be quite windy, remember to secure your hat.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. The afternoon light when the Kiso River sparkles is absolutely spectacular.
