Gently Climb Ogura Hill and Take in Sweeping Views of the Nagara River and Merchant Town

About this spot

A park built on the site of Ogura Castle, constructed in his later years by the Sengoku warlord Kanemori Kanmori, located on a small hill beside the Nagara River. Following a gentle trail to the summit's observation platform reveals expansive views of the Nagara River's flow, the tiled roofs of the udatsu merchant town, and the mountains of Oku-Mino. From above, you can re-examine the town you walked through that morning. The park retains a castle tower structure and stone walls that evoke its martial heritage. Beloved as a cherry blossom viewing spot, a leisurely walk through the park's seasonal greenery and autumn foliage provides the perfect digestive stroll in the Japanese tradition.

Tips

The trail to the summit is about 15 minutes of gentle climbing; with sturdy walking shoes, you won't tire. Within walking distance of the merchant town; if driving, parking is available near the park. The afternoon light makes the Nagara River shimmer beautifully from the observation platform.
