A memorial hall unique to Ogaki, where Matsuo Bashō concluded his long journey of 'The Narrow Road to the Deep North.' The popular theater inside allows visitors to retrace Bashō's journey on a large screen—even children unfamiliar with haiku can enjoy the scale of the journey. The Funcho (船町) port ruins and riverside lighthouse remain nearby along Suimon River, conveying the atmosphere of the time when Bashō departed by boat. The willow-lined towpath is pleasant for leisurely strolls, and combined with the museum visit, you can savor the full ambiance of the City of Water.
Tips
About 15 minutes walk from Ogaki Castle along the Suimon River towpath. The museum interior is barrier-free and easy to view with a stroller. It's smooth to have lunch at restaurants in the shopping district while walking this way before heading toward the station. Some sections along the river have no railings, so hold your child's hand while walking near the water.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes required. Afternoon is a pleasant time when the river surface sparkles and the port ruins are enjoyable to explore.
