About this spot

The chief shrine of Izu Province, from which the name Mishima originates, also known as the place where Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed for the restoration of the Minamoto clan. The spacious shrine grounds are rich in greenery, and a highlight is the large sweet olive tree designated as a national natural monument, said to be over 1,200 years old. In the Kamika-shika Garden within the shrine grounds, sacred deer spend their time peacefully, making it a popular spot with children. After paying your respects, enjoying the famous Fukutaro mochi at the gate tea house is the quintessential Mishima experience.

Tips

The approach and shrine grounds are flat and easy to navigate with a baby stroller. Entry to the shrine grounds is free. On weekends during Shichigosan (coming-of-age celebration) and baby blessing seasons, it gets crowded. At the tea house at the gate, you can enjoy Fukutaro mochi with mugwort, perfect for a light snack. Lunch options abound with eel restaurants specializing in Mishima's famous dish nearby.
