This is the Toshogu Shrine where Tokugawa Ieyasu was first enshrined; following his final wishes, Ieyasu was buried at Kunozan. The Gongen-style shrine buildings, adorned with lacquer and vibrant sculptural details, are designated as national treasures and offer impressive craftsmanship at every turn. Behind the shrine stands the mausoleum, Ieyasu's sacred resting place, a quiet space that moves history lovers to tears. The attached Kunozan Toshogu Shrine Museum houses invaluable collections including armor and swords belonging to successive shogans, and even a mechanical clock gifted to Ieyasu by the Spanish king.

Tips

Admission tickets come in two types: shrine only or a combined ticket with the museum. For history enthusiasts, the combined ticket is recommended. The grounds feature many stone steps and stone pavements, making baby strollers impractical. Omamori (commemorative seals) are available at the shrine office, so don't forget your seal book.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2 hours. Morning hours allow for relatively quiet, unhurried worship.
