About this spot
A nationally designated special historic site that preserves the image of a Yayoi-period paddy field settlement, featured in textbooks. The spacious park has restored pit dwellings, raised-floor storehouses, and shrines for ritual purposes. By actually entering the buildings and walking along the raised walkways, you can feel the daily life of approximately 2,000 years ago with your entire body. The adjacent Toro Museum features exhibitions of unearthed artifacts as well as hands-on experiences where you can touch Yayoi-period clothing and tools, making it perfect for elementary school social studies learning. A truly sacred place for history-loving families where you can realize 'rice was grown here.'
Tips
The archaeological site park is free to explore at your leisure, and the museum's permanent exhibition charges admission (the experience area is free). The park grounds have grass and dirt paths, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Free parking is available, and access by bus from Shizuoka Station is also possible. Few shaded areas in the park, so don't forget a hat and drinks.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Afternoon sunlight is softer, making photos of the restored dwellings beautiful
