About this spot

A narrow suspension bridge spanning the reservoir that shines milky blue, the signature scenic spot of Sumatakyo (寸又峡). The milky, blue-tinged lake surface seen from the bridge is mystical, drawing visitors from all over the country as the suspension bridge you must cross before you die. With the number of people allowed on it at once limited, the gently swaying bridge makes for an unforgettable adventure for kids. The surrounding promenade is wrapped in the green of the gorge, making it a perfect walk to close out the day.

Tips

It's about a 30-minute walk along the promenade from the parking lot or hot-spring town to the suspension bridge. The bridge sways, so always hold small children's hands. During crowded seasons such as autumn foliage, a line can form to wait to cross, so allow plenty of time.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour, including the round-trip walk. It's best to cross while it's still bright, before evening.
