About this spot

A large multipurpose dam built on the middle reaches of the Oi River, an impressive spot where you can look up close at the dam wall towering amid the mountains. During water releases, a curtain of white water cascades down, and from the suspension bridge downstream you may even feel the spray. Since it's within walking distance of Nagashima Dam Station (長島ダム駅) on the Abt Line, it's easy to combine the visit with the train ride, which is part of the appeal. There's also an exhibition facility where you can learn how the dam works, which can be handy inspiration for kids' school projects.

Tips

There's a slope between the station and the dam, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Admission is free. The Abt-system section of the Abt Line exists to climb the steep grade created by this dam's construction, and at some stations you can watch a locomotive being coupled to the train from inside the car.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. During daylight hours, the power of the dam wall is easiest to appreciate.
