A pond-and-stream circulating Japanese garden built on the site of the Oosone mansion, the retirement residence of Mitomo, the second feudal lord of the Owari Tokugawa family. Centered on Ryusen Lake, which represents the sea, the garden features waterfalls, ravines, and stone bridges. As you walk the garden path in a complete circuit, the scenery changes expression moment after moment. The verdant world that unfolds the moment you pass through the Black Gate is so serene you forget you're in an urban center. Spring peonies, early summer irises, autumn maples—the seasonal colors are spectacular, and this is a garden whose charm truly resonates when adults walk through it unhurriedly.
Tips
Admission is 300 yen for adults. Purchasing a combined ticket with Tokugawa Art Museum offers savings. While the garden paths are well-maintained, the area along the ravine has stone steps and uneven ground, so wear comfortable shoes. From Nagoya Castle, travel via subway and bus or Meguru (sightseeing route bus) is convenient. It's recommended to rest on benches beside the pond as you make your way around.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. In the afternoon light, the surface of Ryusen Lake shimmers beautifully.
