About this spot
A renowned Pure Land Buddhist temple known as the family temple of the Matsudaira and Tokugawa clans. The 'vista line'—the view of Okazaki Castle keep straight ahead through the temple gate—is an iconic sight of Okazaki, a carefully preserved view passed down through generations. Inside the hall, life-sized memorial tablets of successive shoguns stand in rows, creating an awe-inspiring experience for history enthusiasts. The temple also holds the remarkable story of how the young Ieyasu received teachings on 'discarding the defiled world and seeking the pure land' here after the Battle of Okehazama and went on to great success—a fitting conclusion to this journey celebrating Ieyasu.
Tips
The halls housing memorial tablets and the treasure room require paid admission with specific visiting hours, so arriving in the early afternoon ensures peace of mind. The temple grounds are free to explore, and the vista line can be viewed from near the temple gate. Free parking available. From Kakukyu, it's about a 15-minute drive.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. The soft afternoon light beautifully illuminates the vista line.
