Tour the Traditional Inn Connected to Sakamoto Ryoma and Trace the Shadow of Late Edo Period Events

A traditional inn representative of late Edo period Fushimi, famous as Sakamoto Ryoma's regular lodging. In 1866, it became the stage of the 'Teradaya Incident,' where Ryoma, surrounded by officers of the Fushimi magistrate, escaped danger thanks to the quick thinking of O-Ryo, who would later become his wife. It was also the scene of a clash between Satsuma samurai in 1862, and the inn bears two moments of intense drama from late Edo period history. The interior displays documents and photographs related to Ryoma, and sword marks on pillars and other details invite visitors to imagine that tense night. The steep stairs and charming guest rooms convey how guests lived in a traditional inn, and history-loving couples will find conversation flowing endlessly. Its proximity to the canal boat landing and location where white-walled brewery buildings continue through the town create a natural continuation with townscape walks.
Tips
About a 5-minute walk from Keihan Main Line Nakashojima Station and just a few minutes' walk from the Gekkeikan Okura Memorial Museum, making it easy to include in a town walk. The interior features traditional wooden construction with steep stairs, so comfortable walking shoes and light clothing are recommended. Walk-in visits are generally accepted, but arriving during less crowded times allows for more leisurely viewing since the interior is compact.

Approximately 45 minutes required. Afternoon in bright daylight allows you to carefully examine the documents and pillar marks.
