Next stop: Pray for three generations' health at this ancient shrine said to be the ancestral home of Ise Grand ShrineAbout this spot
This sandbar stretches approximately 3.6 kilometers between Miyazu Bay and the inner Aso Sea, lined with thousands of pine trees. It is one of Japan's three scenic views, alongside Matsushima and Miyajima. Walking and cycling paths are well-maintained through the pine grove, allowing you to cross to the opposite shore in about 50 minutes on foot or about 20 minutes by rental bicycle. Along the way, you'll find places to explore such as Isoshimizu, a mysteriously freshwater well despite being surrounded by sea (one of Japan's 100 finest waters), and Amanohashidate Shrine, nestled in the middle of the sandbar. The crossing feels like a small adventure. The swivel bridge at the Monju-side entrance is a rare structure that rotates 90 degrees each time a ship passes, which delights children if the timing is right. With white sandy beaches, green pines, and blue sea in sharp contrast right before you, this luxurious walking path allows all three generations to enjoy at their own pace.
Tips
From the Monju side, cross the swivel bridge just beside Chion-ji Temple. Rental bicycles are available at shops near the station and temple gate; choosing a plan that allows you to return them on the opposite shore makes it easy for a one-way trip. The sandbar offers little shade midway, and shops and vending machines are limited, so bring hats and drinks. While the path is flat and stroller-friendly, at 3.6 kilometers, take frequent breaks to match grandparents' pace.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Midday bright sunshine brings out the strongest contrast between white sand and green pines.
