View the Conical Purification Sand and Vermillion Gate, Then Stroll Along Nara Stream

About this spot

Officially named Kamowakeikazuchi Shrine (賀茂別雷神社), this shrine counts among Kyoto's oldest and is registered as a World Heritage Site under "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto." The exquisitely formed conical heaps of purification sand in front of the Hosodendenhas are said to represent Mt. Kamoyama where the enshrined deity descended, and are also known as the origins of purification sand. The vermillion-lacquered romon gate and the clear, gentle flow of Nara Stream through the grounds create an ever-picturesque landscape. Known as a shrine for divine protection against calamity through the deity's thunder authority, the Kataoka Shrine (片岡社) within the precincts is a subsidiary shrine dedicated to matchmaking that even the author Murasaki Shikibu is said to have visited—making it popular for couples' prayers. The spacious lawn approach and crisp morning air make for a refreshingly auspicious beginning to your day of romantic strolling.

Tips

Approximately 15 minutes on foot from Kitayama Station on the Subway Karasuma Line, or about 3 minutes on foot from the "Kamigamo Miono Bridge" bus stop (Kyoto Station via City Bus Route 9). The grounds are covered in gravel, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Special admission to view the main hall and auxiliary hall up close (500 yen) is also available. The handmade market held on the fourth Sunday of each month draws crowds, so arriving early in the morning is best if you prefer a quiet visit.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Early morning right after opening is quietest, allowing you to stroll leisurely in the crisp, clear air.
