Founded in 1924, Japan's first public botanical garden has been a cherished gathering place for Kyoto residents for over 100 years. The expansive 24-hectare grounds are home to approximately 12,000 species of plants, offering completely different faces each season—spring cherry groves and rose gardens, early summer irises, and autumn foliage. The circuit-style conservatory is among Japan's largest, where you can experience everything from tropical jungle plants to succulent desert plants and delicate alpine flora all in one impressive space. The modest 200 yen admission fee is also appealing, and spreading a mat on the lawn for a leisurely picnic lunch makes you forget you're in the city. With plenty of benches and the freedom to walk at your own pace, this is the premier spot for a carefree romantic stroll.

Tips

Exit 3 of Kitayama Station on the Karasuma Line subway brings you directly to the Kitayama Gate. Garden admission: 200 yen; conservatory: additional 200 yen. Bringing your own lunch is welcome, and the lawn is perfect for dining. The conservatory closes admission earlier than park closing time, so check the hours upon arrival for peace of mind.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2 hours. Late morning when flowers are most vibrant is recommended. Enjoy lunch break on the lawn.
