A rare outdoor painting garden in the world where masterpieces by Monet, Michelangelo, and others are reproduced at nearly original size in ceramic tiles. Designed by architect Tadao Ando. The concrete corridors, ramps, and cascading water form a space that is itself a work of art—Monet's "Water Lilies: Morning" is submerged below the water's surface and changes expression with the shifting light. The overwhelming scale of the nearly full-size reproduction of "The Last Judgment," along with eight masterpieces including "Animal Caricatures" and "Along the River During Qingming Festival," can be leisurely enjoyed in about 30 to 45 minutes while listening to the sound of water. Admission is just 100 yen, and its convenient location right next to the botanical garden adds to its appeal. This intimate art and architecture garden is perfect for a sophisticated detour.
Tips
Exit 3 of Kitayama Station leads directly to the space; it is adjacent to the botanical garden's Kitayama Gate. Admission is 100 yen, but a combination ticket with the botanical garden (250 yen) offers savings. As an outdoor facility with no roof, bring an umbrella in rain. With only 8 exhibits, this circuit-style tour takes about 45 minutes even at a leisurely pace.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. Mid-afternoon when the sun is high, light reaches the ceramic tiles submerged in water, making the masterpieces glow beautifully.
