Experience the Town of Standard Time Through the Planetarium and an Overview of the Akashi Strait from the Observation Deck

About this spot

A science museum themed on "Time and Space" standing directly above the 135th meridian, Japan's standard time meridian. The large clock mounted on the approximately 54-meter-tall tower is a landmark of Akashi and has marked the town's time since its opening in 1960. The planetarium houses one of Japan's oldest operating projectors that is still in active use, and the live commentary by curators is full of humor that captivates even adult groups. Inside the museum are abundant exhibits on the history of timekeeping tools such as sundials and water clocks, as well as displays related to the meridian. The observation decks on the 13th and 14th floors offer panoramic views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, Awaji Island, and the town of Akashi you'll explore next—a fitting start to experiencing the town of time.

Tips

About 3 minutes walk from Sanyo Electric Railway's Hitomarumae Station; about 15 minutes east on foot from JR Akashi Station. The planetarium operates on a capacity-basis system, so it's recommended to check the day's screening schedule upon arrival. Parking spaces are limited, so using the train is safer. The museum is typically closed on Mondays, so check opening dates in advance.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. It's best to arrive shortly after opening and time your visit with a morning planetarium showing
