Akashi City Museum of Culture and History

Flow of the course

About this spot

A local history museum nestled on a hill overlooking Akashi Park to the northeast of Akashi Station, introducing the complete history and culture of Akashi. The permanent exhibition galleries trace Akashi's journey through eight themes, including the fascinating story of the "Akashi Man" discovered before World War II that sparked scholarly debate, the fishing culture of the Akashi Strait including octopus-pot fishing, and the evolution of the town as a post-station and castle town—perfect preparation that will make the Fish Arcade and Akashi Park you'll explore later much more interesting. The volume is compact, and thorough viewing takes about an hour. The calm atmosphere is also a perfect moment to pause before eating your way through the shops, and the rotating special and curated exhibitions are worth seeing.

Tips

About 5 minutes walk northeast from JR/Sanyo Akashi Station; located on a small hill up the slope. The permanent exhibition costs just 200 yen for adults and takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to view. On scheduled dates, you can try on samurai armor or junihitoe (twelve-layered formal court dress), so check availability on the day if interested.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Stopping by before noon and heading directly to the arcade flows smoothly
