Hop Between Akashi-yaki Restaurants and Sample Seafood Like Octopus and Conger Eel
About this spot
The kitchen of Akashi with a history said to have begun with the construction of Akashi Castle some 400 years ago. Affectionately known as "Uontana," this roughly 350-meter-long arcade is packed with nearly 100 shops including fresh fish stores, processed food vendors, dried goods shops, and Akashi-yaki restaurants. The signature specialty is undoubtedly Akashi-yaki (called tamagoyaki locally)—fluffy batter dipped in dashi broth and devoured with relish. Since each shop puts its own spin on the batter and dashi, hopping between restaurants for a taste comparison is the highlight of this course. Outside the shops, there's a continuous temptation of tako (octopus) tempura, grilled conger eel, and freshly fried processed foods. The afternoon, when the "shio-ami" (midday catch) of fresh fish lines the stalls, is when the market's energy reaches its peak. For groups of food-loving friends, there's never enough time.
Tips
About 2-3 minutes walk south from JR/Sanyo Akashi Station. Popular Akashi-yaki shops get long lines around lunch, so the trick is to enter the first shop right at opening or hit the shops with faster turnover. Many shops are cash-only, so have small change ready. For seafood souvenirs like octopus and conger eel, a cooler bag is reassuring.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. The early afternoon when the midday catch is on display and the market is most lively is the best time
